From One Banner to Over 100: The Story Behind the Gilt Sale Banner

When I first started showing, the idea of a banner at a Premium Gilt Sale was unheard of. The usual routine was simple: take a photo with the backdrop, maybe snap a quick picture of the gilt pens, and that was enough to share the moment. Nobody asked for anything more. But over time, something changed. What began as a casual snapshot evolved into a meaningful tradition that now plays a big role in how exhibitors celebrate and share their success.
The Early Days: Simple Photos and Backdrops
In the beginning, the presentation was straightforward. Exhibitors relied on the sale’s backdrop for photos, capturing their gilt in the ring or near the pens. These images were shared on Facebook or passed around within the community. There was no pressure to create something polished or professional. The focus was on the gilt and the win itself, not the presentation.
One year, though, we decided to try something different. We wanted a way to represent our gilt going into the Premium Gilt Sale that felt more intentional. Something that showed the effort behind the scenes, not just the moment in the ring. So we made our own banner.
Creating Our First Banner
Our first banner was homemade. We used poster board, printed 4x6 photos, cut them out by hand, and glued them where we thought they looked best. It wasn’t fancy or perfect, but it felt like a big deal. It was a way to show pride in the gilt and the work leading up to the sale.
This simple project marked the start of a new tradition. It was our version of a Premium Gilt Sale banner, and it made the moment feel more special.

Growing Interest from Other Families
After that first banner, other families started asking if we could make one for theirs but make it better. It wasn’t something anyone expected or planned for. It was just an extra touch that people thought would be cool to have.
We made one banner, then a few more. The next year, it became a handful. Soon, it turned into a list of requests. Families began planning their banners before even stepping into the ring.
Presentation Becomes Part of the Process
As the years passed, presentation started to matter more. The way a win was shared became part of the experience. Social media became a second show ring, where exhibitors could showcase their gilt and their hard work.
Custom banners became a way to tell a story. Exhibitors wanted to pick the colors, photos, layout, and overall look. They wanted something that represented their gilt, their family, and everything that led to that moment in the ring.

The Scale of Today’s Banners
Heading into this year’s OYE, we will create over 100 custom banners for the Premium Gilt Sale alone. This growth shows how much these banners have become part of the culture.
The excitement of designing a banner is often as strong as the excitement of the win itself. Exhibitors take pride in choosing every detail, making sure the banner tells their story.
Looking back at where it started makes us even more thankful to be a small part of where it is today. We’re excited to once again design this year’s Premium Gilt Sale banners and help showcase the work that’s been put in long before show day.
